Collabhouse ambassadors and American DJ/producer brothers BEAUZ have been inescapable during 2024.
Whether they’re dominating the festival circuit, selling out some of the most iconic venues in North America and Asia, or dropping bombshell remixes of tracks like My Humps and Bel Mercy, or original singles like ‘Lick It’, the pair have been collecting an absolute army of dedicated fans tuned to their every movement.
Across TikTok and Instagram, more than 600,000 self-professed ‘Baddies’ follow BEAUZ’ every movement, while their Hard Techno mixes on YouTube have clocked up a whopping 2 million views, putting them in the upper echelons of Hard Techno acts. With support from the likes of Ben Nicky, Nico Moreno, Subtronics and more, the brothers have managed to find that often elusive sweet spot between authentic and commercial.
With over 10 years’ hard work in the studio now starting to seriously pay off, the future is looking incredibly bright for BEAUZ. We thought it about high time Bernie and Johan came into the Collabhouse to tell us more…
Hi Bernie, Johan, thanks so much for joining us today. Where in the world are you right now and what are you doing?
Hello and thanks for having us! We are currently at our homes in Taiwan. We just finished up a recent North American tour and have been spending time in the studio making music, producing content, and transitioning back to our healthy lifestyle to balance out the craziness while on tour. Johan actually recently went back to school, participating in an MBA program at National Taiwan University, which we think will help us expand and elevate our brand in ways previously not possible.
You’re both official ambassadors for Collabhouse – what was it about the platform that made you want to join forces?
The biggest thing that drew us to Collabhouse is the ease of use for the platform they’ve built, which makes splitting and withdrawing royalties extremely efficient. In addition we really appreciate the staffs that dedicate themselves to help us maximize each release, shoutout Riccardo.
You took part in a €5k promo campaign on Collabhouse – how successful was it and what did it deliver to your track in terms of visibility?
It was done very professionally, we couldn’t have asked for a better partner who have the proper resources and use them transparently for us to see.
Why would you recommend other producers use Collabhouse?
In the beginning of our career, like many artists, we opted to release with labels with the biggest reputations. While it significantly enabled us to acquire industry recognition, we realized that big labels often don’t prioritize releases, not to mention they usually seek for songs in styles with proven successful commercial value, which means an artist can only go so far in terms of experimentation if they want to consistently release with the same label.
Before setting our foot firmly in the realm of Hard Techno, our career had been one of multiple evolutions. We experimented with various styles of dance music and found it impossible to only release with one label. The result was that our audience became extremely scattered with no dedicated fan base.
Eventually we decided to release tracks with Collabhouse that we feel don’t fit with any labels. And to our joy, they performed really well and garnered us a loving dedicated fan base. In addition we love the freedom we have over the accompanying content for each release, which really helps to solidify our brand identity.
Tell us about your music-making process – who takes control of which parts of the new music?
We both make music, but I (Bernie) enjoy a slight advantage of being extremely patient with the process. Hence over the years I’ve taken the role of choosing the perfect sounds and finishing up the tracks.
On the other hand, Johan is less picky with his music taste and can often provide me with solutions I might not be able to conceive on my own. After all, our affinity for certain sounds overlap in a lot of ways and making music is always more fun with another ear.
What’s inside the BEAUZ studio?
To be honest, we travel so much that the only essential equipments really are our MacBook Pro M3 Max, Beats Pro headphones (discontinued unfortunately but still our favorite headphone in terms of build quality and the right amount of bass), Focusrite Scarlett i8i8. However, our main studio in Indonesia has Yamaha HS8 monitors, Komplete S61 keyboard, Rhode NT1-A microphone, and of course DJM V10 and CDJ 3000s.
What pieces of kit can’t you live without and why?
We’re gonna have to obviously say our computers. Without our computers, our superpowers are stripped and nothing can be accomplished.
Is there a ‘secret sauce’ to BEAUZ music that sets your productions apart from others?
Yes, we take BADDIE UP™️, a unique state-of-the-art energizing supplement that enables us to feel our best even on bad days.
In terms of music, we take pride in making our productions as simple as possible, preserving only the crucial elements that will absolutely make a difference in the overall listening experience.
What have you got coming up next and where can Collabhouse users catch you out on the road?
I remember we used to always have this “next big thing” to anticipate in our careers, a collab, a big label release, a huge show that we thought would absolutely make a difference.
Presently, however, consistency and a healthy sustainable lifestyle are what has proven to constantly propel us forward. We will invest more and more in our physical and mental wellbeing so we can constantly be the baddest baddies that lead the pack, inspire the rest, and live our best lives.
For those of you that want to witness the BADDIE UP™️ experience live, stay updated on Instagram or visit beauz.world/tour
